Laere – Solve [EP]

laere – solve [ep]

Info

The band name Laere represents a combination of the German word for empty, leer, and the Norwegian word Laere, which means to teach or learn. Empty learning: the unison of two meanings of the band name serves as a concept for dealing with an indifference to exist and the following path of suffering and transcendence. The persons behind the band are unknown, but at least we know that the band originates from the city of Bochum in Germany, and that the self-released 7” EP ‘Solve’ is the band’s first feat.

While the band name unites German and Norwegian, the music on the band’s debut EP sounds distinctly like Icelandic Black Metal. Both in terms of the dark oppressive production, but even more so musically, it’s hard to deny parallels with in particular Svartidauði and to a lesser extent Sinmara. Not that Laere makes things all too dissonant, but they utilize the same time of twisted riffs and extend their atmospheric landscape through long-spun midtempo sections. The guitar sound is especially eerie and desolate in these sections, and one can only conclude that the band has done a great job at emulating the same. The two tracks on ‘Solve’ each last about five to six minutes but offer plenty of variation, even though Laere doesn’t quite keep things as dynamic and grandiose as their Icelandic inspiration. That is by no means to their discredit, but merely an observation and room for growth. Despite that, Laere’s debut release ‘Solve’ is an excellent and short introduction to the sound of the band, and a promise for a great future if they manage to develop their sound even further.
