Sigon – Thunder of Iron

Info

Part two of “Lord Warmoon conquers the world in 2025” is presented in the form of the debut album of Sigon. In this entity, Lord Warmoon, under the pseudonym Magister Salax D’volta in this collective, is joined by Hell Priest of Nocturnal Mass, his former companion in crime when they were both in Sperm Angel and currently also part of Astral Wizard. In the first release of Lord Warmoon of 2025, he took his obsession for Heavy Metal and Black Metal in a punkier direction with Mutant Sex Demon. On the debut of Sigon, the two gents instead dive more into 80’s Speed Metal with a Black Metal edge.

After a short and bombastic intro, ‘Pear of Anguish’ is essentially a Black Metal track with speed metal leads and rhtyhms, and in a sense reminds me of Lord Warmoon’s old band Morgal, albeit not nearly as extreme in pace. With snarling, high-pitched throat and melodic solos, the song is a great blend between Heavy and Speed melodicism and a piercing Black Metal sound. These elements remain key for the rest of ‘Thunder of Iron’, although on the rest of the album the balance is more shifted toward epic Heavy/Speed Metal with prominent leads and excellent solos. These often contrast with the omnipresent Black Metal shrieks (which remind me in pitch of Werwolf of Satanic Warmaster), although some Black Metal elements surface. Take for instance the snappy drums of ‘Sigon’s Strength’ or the chugging groove of ‘King’s Land’ and ‘Kingdom of Destruction’ that remind me of the more epic Immortal material. All these elements are condensed into less than 25 minutes, which quite frankly is actually kind of perfect for the style.

Placing it alongside Devil Moon and Mutant Sex Demon, Sigon is the most uptempo of the three Blackened odes to the 80’s, leaning more on the Speed Metal tradition. Sigon is probably the most musical and sophisticated in terms of play, with plenty of splendid leads and solos scattered across the album, but certainly also harbours the same degree of catchiness as the others. I personally find the contrast between the Heavy Metal melodies and the raspy vocals to work splendidly, and hope this record gets picked up for a physical release. I would certainly purchase a copy! One thing is for certain, once Lord warmoon commits himself to something it usually leads to an excellent product.
