A new review section: Buried by Time And Dust

We added a new review section, coincidentally another Mayhem reference following 'The Past is Alive', with the title 'Buried by Time and Dust'. Over the years, a lot of promos have been gathering dust simply because a fresh wave of promos arrived the following month and they were consigned to oblivion. We will review them here to make a clear distinction with our other reviews. We will also use it to complete a discography in terms of reviews. Feel free to contact us if you would like to submit your music or would like to join the staff.

This is the debut split EP by both Finnish Black Metal band Ilmainen Raamattukurssi and Christ’s Thorn, and combines traditional church music with Black Metal. How this split actually works is the odd numbered tracks are Black Metal tracks with a deep synth undertone from Ilmainen Raamattukurssi, whilst the two even numbered tracks are short interludes of standard church music, the first of which features some terrible vocal work which happily never re-appear again. Opening track ‘Ristinmerkki’ is a genuinely catchy slice of mid tempo, organ dominated Black Metal with serpentine slithering vocals. Whilst the drumming style is basic, it is also perfect for this track, and the same goes for the guitar melodies. The chanting vocal style gives the track a satisfying ritualistic  Lutheran mass quality and the free flowing melody means the track flies by. This is the high point of the split EP though, and the following offerings are average at best and descend into carnival like rhythms where the Black Metal element feels forgotten. Its worth a listen though, even if just for the opening track.
