Wight – Wight [EP]

wight – wight [ep]

Info

Wight from Winchester, Virginia lands on the US Black Metal scene with first release, a self-titled EP. In four tracks, A. Geist (all instruments) and NXH (vocals) take us through their obsession with Black Metal. And this is mostly focused on the early Scandinavian scene, ranging from raging passages to a more grooving sound to more symphonic territories and even some folky Black Metal. The result is a little bit of a mix of everything that is certainly charming, but maybe a little bit too all-encompassing and a tad directionless. That is not to say it’s bad at all. It’s well played and in particular ‘Dark Delights in Crimson Lust’ is a very enjoyable track, while in ‘Lethe’ the band combines its Bathory-like riffs and clean vocals and meandering bass successfully with a more atmospheric Black Metal approach. In general I like how the EP sounds, with a touch of reverb on the excellent vocals that remind me of Dissection’s Jon Nodveidt and creativity and skill in the bass and guitar play throughout the recording.

The material on ‘Wight’ sounds like a younger band that’s still looking to find their sound for the project. And that’s exactly what these early releases are for. This EP certainly has everything to peak my curiosity for future Wight releases.
