Satanism – Lycanthropic Legion

satanism – lycanthropic legion

Info

In the last couple of months I reviewed two releases of other bands of Scott Thayer (here going under the name of “Preacher of Unholy Blasphemies”) and I think I can conclude that whether you would take Black Lycanthropy, Genocidal Rites or Satanism (he has a few other bands/projects going on too) you can be sure to be served with some mean stuff. Under the moniker of Satanism Thayer (I’ll stick with his birthname for the sake of convenience) brings us yet another morsel of unadulterated Black/Death Metal in the good old Ross Bay Cult tradition.

After a short intro the 23-minute full-length explodes into what is unfolding into a true homage of the genre giants of Beherit, Goatlord and above all Blasphemy. Yet, the heavy buzz-sawing guitar sound used on ‘Lycanthropic Legion’ makes the album feel closest to Archgoat, the often slow primitive pummeling completes the picture of the ultra-barbasim that reflects that of the Finns. The (not so well kept) secret to a good piece of bawdiness like this lies in a purely authentic sound and applying just that little bit of dynamics to keep it exciting and “fresh”. Thayer apparently unraveled that secret early on, as he manages to intersperse the slow parts well with furiously furious outbursts while a nice murky sound completes things. So it should come as no surprise that this debut album comes with my warm recommendation for those who never get tired of a nice serving of bludgeoning savagery.
