Nocturnal Deviancy – Rites Of Forbidden Knowledge [Demo]

nocturnal deviancy – rites of forbidden knowledge [demo]

Info

Just before the band’s split with Drowning The Light, Nocturnal Deviancy released this little demo, made available as a digital stream only (at least so far). With the music mainly evolving around impressive and emotional ambiance deeply rooted, earlier output by the band already showed the profound song writing skills of Vollmond (also in Feeble Diety and Flagellant). Yet, it is all the more stunning to see Vollmond progressive quite drastically with each of his subsequent releases.

‘Rites Of Forbidden Knowledge’ starts with a beautiful synth-track that finds itself somewhere at the turning point between Dark Ambient and Dungeon Synth. Although it is a full stand-alone song of almost 4 minutes, it still feels like an introduction of what is to come and to prepare you for the blazing and hateful Black Metal that is about to hit you. Once again Vollmond is showing his knack for 90’s Black Metal and albeit he is only still 20 years old and did not get to experience those golden days himself, he does so very convincingly.

Raw Black Metal in all its hateful beauty, yet Vollmond is able to enhance each of his songs with enough dynamics and interesting riff progressions that he is able to lift Nocturnal Deviancy way above the average level of Raw Black Metal. Not in the least because of the aforementioned atmosphere, which is mainly to be found in the terrific riffing and tension building within the songs. It is all about those memorable riffs, no keyboards are used in the core of the tracks, something that makes a comparison with the classics of the late 90’s and early 00’s quite easy. Fans of bands like Moonblood, old Nargaroth, Satanic Warmaster, Weltmacht and Judas Iscariot should definitely take notice.
