Vampyric Bloodlust – Wretched Is The Light [EP]

vampyric bloodlust – wretched is the light [ep]

Info

Sure, I’m not the fastest writer, but in the time between adding the first Vampyric Bloodlust EP ‘Midnight Slaughter’ to my review list and the actual review, sole band member Mördann managed to release not only an additional full-length but also a new EP with Vampyric Bloodlust. ‘Dark Blessing’ constituted a whopping 66-minute exercise in minimalistic and Raw Black Metal that, to be fair, is a little bit too much for me to endure. Let’s say I prefer that style to be a little bit more concise, although admittedly Mördann did add a little bit more variation in pace on that album. Still, it was a bit of a pleasant surprise that the newest EP ‘Wretched Is the Light’ is just a little bit below the 12-minute mark. Not only that, but it could also be a departure in sound.

While ‘Midnight Slaughter’ presented the band’s view on Raw Black Metal with minimal variation in pace and riffs and the album was largely an extension of that formula, the latest EP is rather different. Once the strumming clear opening of the title track transcends into the bulk of the track, the heavier guitar sound, cleaner production and much reduced pace are immediately evident. It gives the EP a gloomier character, and makes the material lean more towards the likes of Forgotten Tomb for instance. With a humming of (seemingly) keyboards in the background, the music has therefore taken a more atmospheric twist. This is further enforced in ‘Nocturnal Gathering’, which has some subtle melodies that vaguely remind of the very earliest Katatonia work. What has remained are the raspy vocals and the gnarly undertone of the riffs, and combined with these enhanced dynamics in pace. Despite the charm of monotony of ‘Midnight Slaughter’, it seems liked a right move to experiment with this new formula on ‘Wretched Is the Light’. Whether this remains an experiment or presents part of a new direction for Vampyric Bloodlust remains to be seen. But with the relentless release pace of Mördann, I imagine that answer may come sooner rather than later.
