A new review section: Buried by Time And Dust

We added a new review section, coincidentally another Mayhem reference following 'The Past is Alive', with the title 'Buried by Time and Dust'. Over the years, a lot of promos have been gathering dust simply because a fresh wave of promos arrived the following month and they were consigned to oblivion. We will review them here to make a clear distinction with our other reviews. We will also use it to complete a discography in terms of reviews. Feel free to contact us if you would like to submit your music or would like to join the staff.

‘Regina Mundi’ is the off kilter third release from UK one man misanthropic Black Metal project Oppress, whose bludgeoning drumming style, bass heavy rumbling baritone and snarled/whispered vocal style clash right from the opening note to create a cacophony of hostile proportions. I say clash rather than combine due to the fact that this EP has a less than cohesive feel to it, and seems more intent of simply hammering its listeners into the ground rather than creating anything particularly listenable. When the overbearing drumming display briefly abates the maliciousness and savagery that hides beneath their barbarity comes out to cast its poisoned bile over proceedings, but sadly this is a rare instance and the majority of this release is a punishing reminder that there is far better Black Metal out there to listen to. I could appreciate this a lot more if I thought it was intended to sound inhospitable, and there are various BM projects that create sounds and noise with the intension of their work being an ordeal, a test of aural endurance. For me ‘Regina Mundi’ sadly doesn’t fit into this category and comes over as frankly poorly written and underwhelmingly performed. (Marksson)
