Svrm – Прощання [EP]

svrm – Прощання [ep]

Info

Almost immediately after the band’s conception back in the early 00’s Drudkh has gained a big following. Not only in people who found something new in the sort of Black Metal that they brought, but these early Drudkh albums also kickstarted a whole new generation of Black Metal bands that began focussing more on epic and nature-inspired atmosphere. And anno 2024 it is fair to say that without Drudkh’s visionary work a lot of today’s biggest bands in this particular niche of the Black Metal genre would not exist. One of such bands definitely would be Svrm from Kharkiv, Ukraine, the same city as from where Drudkh began their journey some fifteen years before.

Svrm, a one-man act led by S., has been nothing but extremely prolific since its very start in 2015. No less than three demos, an equal amount of full-length records and nine EP’s of which ‘Прощання’ is the latest (and second of this year). Some of these works merely exist as a digital stream, but selected titles have found their ways onto physical sound carriers through labels such as Dawnbreed Records or Vendetta Records.

Admittedly, I haven’t exactly heard all of S.’ work so far, but judging from the latest two EP’s it quite amazing that these recordings have not been picked up by any label yet. As basically anyone who has had a knack for that magical sound of Drudkh will be able to get their kicks out of it. The somewhat repetitive and melancholic riffs and acoustic passages are whirling in beautiful fashion and encapsulate the magnificence and heroics of Eastern European countries. The trademark contrast of such well-crafted beauty against the Black Metal vocals and pounding and somewhat static drums do make ‘Прощання’ yet another amazing and compelling ride.

It also shows that S. is definitely a top-tier song writer and he gets increasingly better at it too, listening back through his impressive back catalogue it is clear that his development as a musician and song writer is immensely progressing. His latest two EP’s are certainly more than just a great piece of emotional and challenging Black Metal in the right Ukrainian tradition.
