Absolute Key & Hail Conjurer – Trident Vision Live

absolute key & hail conjurer – trident vision live

Info

It is not the first time that the creative Finnish Black Metal extraordinaire Hail Conjurer and the mind-boggling dark noise metal scoundscapist Absolute Key join up to bring you some otherworldly sonic experience. In fact, it is not even the second time. This is actually the third time both musicians share a release, ‘Trident Vision Live’ was preceded by a split 7” in 2020 and a collaboration that was released in 2023 on both vinyl and CD. But also on their individual accounts, both acts are not strangers to team up with like-minded musicians from distinctly different musical fields. However, as the title already suggests, this tape is the reflection of how it sounds when both bands collide in a turbulent clash.

‘Trident Vision Live’ is a collage of five tracks that were captured during the act’s collaboration on three different live occasions (Kouvala, September 2023, Helisinki September 2023 and Tampere January 2024). All faithfully assembled, edited and mixed to present to you on this tape, which comes in a limited edition of 50 hand-numbered copies. Only for the true connoisseurs I would say.

Over the years I have used the comparison a few times already and therefore it starts to become a bit of a gimmick, but in the case of ‘Trident Vision Live’ it feels more in place than ever before. This truly is not for your average Watain-listener. These two gents are mixing in the best of their individual musical share. The result, however, is not for the faint of heart. Utterly noisy and thoroughly impenetrable. Due to the raw but surprisingly good audio the recordings really convey a live-experience in which Black Noise is expertly intertwined with the Noise and horror-esque soundscapes. Resulting in something that flows naturally between more Black Metal sort of passages, akin to the noisiest excesses of Abruptum, to parts that at times even feel like Power Electronics.

It might not be the sort of stuff that is been picked up by the majority of the Black Metal listeners, but if you have been following Hail Conjurer’s ever-expanding musical horizons, it will by no means be a surprise that eventually something like this would appear it the band’s discography. Which is not to say that this is necessarily unique, given previous collaborations with (among others) Absolute Key, but the ingenuity and agility with which it is brought to the stage here does prove the visionary and boundlessly creative spirit behind Hail Conjurer. Followers of Absolute Key may find this a little easier to swallow, a trained ear will presumably have less trouble with this, but they too will hear that this combination is a sonic highlight in that intriguing back-catalogue.
