Dragsholm – Sorrow Hexen [EP]

dragsholm – sorrow hexen [ep]

Info

Melodic Black Metal with the spirit of the 90s? I applaud the effort! After all, some truly fine albums came out of that scene. However, the critical bastard that I am, I need more than just nostalgia to fully recommend it.

Dragsholm already has 2 EPs and 2 splits under its belt, prior to this one, and their new effort showcases a melting pot of musical ideas. I myself hear inspiration and ideas from old Hecate Enthroned, Siebenbürgen’s first two albums, Dimmu Borgir’s ‘Stormblåst’ and Ancient during ‘The Cainian Chronicle’ to name a few, without sounding exactly like those acts or albums nor reaching their level.

The musical approach is admirable, but the execution and songwriting don’t quite hit the mark yet, in my opinion. Tracks like ‘Irina’s Heart’ and ‘Verglas’ feature some riffs that are typical of the genre. However, these songs lack a sense of completion. For instance, the aforementioned ‘Irina’s Heart’ starts with a Melodic Black Metal which has a bass part as a bridge and transforms into an up-tempo darker instrumental part, which feels disconnected with the first part, and has an abrupt ending. Personally, I think they could benefit from focusing on a single cohesive idea when composing songs.

So, I’m not fully convinced yet. But if Dragsholm does some tweaking and sticks to one plan, I’m certainly curious about what they come up with next.
