‘Nacht Des Grauens’ or Halloween, is German based Mordberg’s first demo. Grauen is the sole force behind this raw Black Metal mongrel. The sound on Mordberg’s demo has been stripped of all unnecessary frills and what remains is a pure, Spartan like sound image. The production often reminds me of the sound Akitsa created on ‘Credo’ yet with that extra grit poured over the whole. Thus no reverb or echo’s, no quality killing distortion that keeps you from listening the whole thing through, what makes it even more interesting is that Mordberg fires off a fairly varied demo, by raw Black Metal standards that is, in which slow, dragging passages are smoothly alternated with fierce midtempos or furious blast sequences.

Yet …however much I like the atmosphere, the execution and the grainy sound, it strikes me that very few of the compositions really stick, even after several listens. Unfortunately, Mordberg fails to excite my central nervous system, as raw Black Metal is supposed to feel like an arctic fist slowly squeezing your warm pumping heart to death.

Still, I’m going to keep Mordberg in my sights, since this is the debut demo and I feel there is a lot of room for arctic progression. My warm pumping heart is waiting.
