Pillagery – Pillagery [Demo]

pillagery – pillagery [demo]

Info

Pillagery, a new Canadian Black/Death Metal outfit, is presenting its first feat in the form of this 4-track demo tape that (almost) simultaneously saw the darkness of day with a rehearsal tape (‘Rehearsal MMXXIV’). There is not much info available on Pillagery, but the duo behind the band do go by the names of “The Ripping Sodomizer” and “Hammer of False Prophets”, so when you add that knowledge to the band’s origin and the black/white/red aesthetics of the artwork and you might be able to paint a bit of the picture.

After the short introductory seconds the demo bursts into a savage and relentless pummelling of unbridled Black/Death Metal in the right Bestial/War Metal tradition. It might not at all be something original, but the way that these two lordships are presenting us with their barbaric deeds is thoroughly entertaining. Due to the somewhat sharper guitar tone when compared to many of their peers, Pillagery sounds less devastating or bulldozing than, say, Blasphemy, Proclamation or Abysmal Lord. Instead the band has a stronger Black Metal impression. While the clearer colour in the guitars makes it a tad harder to discern, the riffs are still sufficiently grinding, resulting in something that reminds of the “lighter” and less Death Metal sounding Archgoat material.

In just about eight minutes and a half, we get a good impression of what Pillagery is capable of. It is the icy riffs with a distinct Norwegian Black Metal touch (Gorgoroth, Carpathian Forest, Armagedda) and the ditto tormented vocals that give Pillagery a categorical face of its own. Other than that, all the necessary ingredients are there and the band’s performance is nothing short of a treat for those who are into this particular niche genre.
