Necrogore – Ancestral Abhorrence [EP]

necrogore – ancestral abhorrence [ep]

Info

Last year I stumbled upon Italy’s Necrogore, a band that isn’t offering anybody a life-changing experience. On the contrary, Necrogore is playing it quite safe with their mixture of Old Schooled Swedish Death Metal with a slightly more groove-fuelled modernism to it. But, the difference between the majority of their peers and Necrogore is that Necrogore on their first EP, ‘Digging From Below’ actually had something going. Call is a little spark or maybe some magic… Whatever it was, that debut EP was quite an entertaining introduction to these Italians.

Now the band returns with another EP, yet where ‘Digging From Below’ clocked in around 17 minutes, this new one not even reaches the 9-minute mark. But that is not quite the most ear-catching difference. While all key-ingredients are still very much in place, the overall sound presented on ‘Ancestral Abhorrence’ is remarkably different.

Of course, the band is still very much into Death Metal of the Swedish kind, with lots of chugging and meaty riffs and trademark vocals. Yet, the overall sound is where the comparison with the first EP makes it more interesting. ‘Digging From Below’ had a more standard Death Metal sound, heavy and massive, with a good HM-2 buzz poured over it. These three new songs have a distinctly sharper sound, emphasizing the aggressive nature of the music. Subsequently, the music feels faster and more savage. As a result, the band drifts a bit further away from the more standard Swedish Death Metal fundamentals, but gains on freshness. Downside of this new approach is that the drums, especially the kick drums, do sound a bit flat and even digital – something that doesn’t bother me that much, but is quite different from the pounding kick drums that we might be used to.

It will be a matter of personal taste or frame of reference to which sound you will actually be more attracted to, but  to me it kind of worked both. Too bad that this EP has only been released digitally so far, I would’ve loved to catch it on cassette tape, just like the previous one.
