Warorath – Verikirous

warorath – verikirous

Info

After having been formed in 2019, it took this Finnish Black Metal band a few years to come up with their first recordings. Yet, in 2023 the band came out with their first EP, a split cassette with the Latvian Black Metal band Yr and a preview single for this freshly released debut album that saw the light of day at the first month of 2024.

Coming from Finland, it is almost inevitable to compare the music on offer with the country’s rich and wealthy Black Metal scene – even if only unconsciously. But doing so, it might come clear that Warorath hasn’t got all that much in common. At least, they are not direct copy of the tried-and-tested Finnish Black Metal formula, instead they seem to present a rather incoherent mish-mash of different styles and influences.

While that makes ‘Verikirous’ (Finnish for ‘Blood Curse’) a rather versatile and throroughly varied album, it is also rather hard to really make something out of it. For sure, the album is spangled with great musical ideas, so that in almost every song there is something interesting to chew on. You are being served with a wide range of different things, ranging from Black-n’-Roll to Atmospheric Black Metal and from Heavy Metal turns and twists to slow, melodic and melancholic passages.

Of course, under no circumstances would I want this youthful and creative enthusiasm to be tempered, but perhaps it wouldn’t hurt to channel that flow of unbridled energy a little better to make it a more cohesive experience. The talent and potential are obviously there, so I am definitely checking out the band’s next effort.
