Although The Satan’s Scourge, hailing from Bogota, Colombia, has already been around for over two decades, ‘Abhorrent Spear Of Vengeance’ is only the band’s second full-length album and follow-up to 2022’s ‘De Carminibus Prophanis Necrophiliae’. However, it’s also incorrect to say that the band has been sitting still all these years, through a considerable number of demos, EP’s and split releases the band has been steadily working on an underground reputation over the past years. That this has remained mainly within their own borders and continent can perhaps be attributed to the fact that they have mainly worked with local labels. This latest piece also appears with Colombian Triumvirate Of Evil, however, it is clear that an “underground breakthrough” is not failing to materialize due to the lack of quality.
Those who have stumbled upon the band before, might very well have done so by the 2011-released compilation LP by Nuclear War Now! Productions or the 7” EP by Legion Of Death Records from France. Both of these releases saw the light of day in the early stage of the band’s existence, but still hold the very essence of what The Satan’s Scourge is all about on a musical level. Non-original Black/Death Metal that bears the band’s origins with proud. The wild and frantic energy and aggression that typifies the South American brand of Black/Death Metal is all over the place.
Chaos and disorder, it’s really all there: a blistering and messy pace, hysterical whammy leads and rabid vocals. In this specific musical setting you could affectionately call this the South American second cousin of Angelcorpse. That their music is more of a sloppy nature and comes in a harsher production is only attributing to the overall ambiance of this second album of the Colombians. Still, it is abundantly clear that ‘Abhorrent Spear Of Vengeance’ is commendable step forward when compared to the preceding album or the older short-players.
Although it doesn’t dishes up anything you haven’t heard before, this latest piece of work basically perfectly captures the whole culture of Extreme Music of Latin America. Definitely a continent that doesn’t discriminate and throws in Black Metal, Death Metal, Thrash, Grindcore, Noise… Just about everything, so it blends down to something that is hard to dislike if you have a soft spot for anything that came from these countries around the turn of the 90’s.
