Lagnia – Sigil [Demo]

lagnia – sigil [demo]

Info

With little to no information about this new German Black Metal band, I took a deep dive into their first recording. Just like the band name the title of the demo is short and simple, and that actually gave away the biggest lead to what to expect on this first 12-minute outing…

If Lagnia is proving something, it is that you don’t need to reinvent the wheel to be offer some great music. Without being original or serving anything remotely technical or creative, ‘Sigil’ sounds breathtaking in all its uncomplicatedness. This first 2-tracker sounds and feels like a genuine homage to melodic yet riff-based Black Metal in true Northern fashion. Somewhere between Norwegian acts like Taake and Swedish bands such as Setherial, the music for the most part swing back and forth between mid-paced and up-tempo and empowers the catchy melodies. Those melodies do not only sound big and majestic, but also clearly breathes a glorious Pagan feel. Especially towards the end of the second track, ‘Egg Of The Serpent’, some Folky trademark vocal humming propels the music towards a very familiar Pagan atmosphere.

Although the band didn’t supply any information on its back ground, I would be very surprised if there weren’t some very seasoned musicians behind Lagnia. The music on offer simply is too impressive in both song writing and overall maturity – but I would be gladly proven wrong if that is the case. For now, ‘Sigil’ is just a near-perfect first demo of a very promising band. In fact, keeping the length but especially the quality of the songs in consideration, ‘Sigil’ would make a perfect 7″ EP. So: labels, pay attention, these Germans are definitely ready for it!
