Vitr – Soumrak [EP]

vitr – soumrak [ep]

Info

Vitr is the Czech word for wind, and is now also the name of a new Czech one man Melodic Black Metal project that hails from Prague, who to start this new year off has released a debut three track EP entitled ‘Soumrak’. The word Soumrak translates as Dusk, and the themes running through the EP focus on Czech and Slavic folk tales. Vitr kick straight into things with ‘Hle, Černobog’ (Behold! Chernobog) which has an instantly on edge feel to it through the use of an urgent and harsh vocal style. Of particular interest are the guitar techniques; a bold and brash style of riffs with a bleak, cold guitar melody running beneath and through the core sound, and all of this completed by the use of powerful and meaty drumming and bass tones. The next track entitled ‘Pursuit of Immortality’ is a sleeker, catchier affair with a more cohesive rhythm and some pleasing harmonic interludes, and yet still has a hard and abrasive front to it, created through dominant guitar leads and an unwavering drumming style. This short EP draws to a close with ‘Ztracen V Hloubi Lesa’, (Lost Deep in the Forest) a traditional, windswept and Arctic sounding slice of Scandinavian Black Metal worship. A more than decent EP is ‘Soumrak’ and very much worth experiencing.
