gølgaborg – suicide and misanthropy: depression, lethargy, hatred…

Info

The thoughts, emotions, and even the acts leading up to the ending of one’s own life are romantic in nature. It is like breaking up with yourself, and ‘Suicide and Misnathropy: Depression, Lethargy, Hatred…’ proves this. Most would think that life has a lot to offer, but with this fine display of Depressive Suicidal Black Metal, Gølgaborg shows us the opposite.

Song titles like ‘Dejected,’ ‘The Sterile stench of the Psychiatric Ward,’ and ‘No Escape’ transfer the listener to a mind that is at the point of never returning to a normal life, absolute madness. This understanding about the music pushes emotions displayed to dark depths. The music is not overtly suicidal, but much more about coming to terms with what seems like best – detaching from oneself. This album runs at an abnormally long 1:14:42, leaving most of the tracks over 7 minutes long. The music drags on creating droning sadness, marching hate, and even ethereal melancholy.

As with most Black Metal of this kind, production quality is out the window leaving the guitars and drums to create atmosphere rather than audible distinction. Structure wise the tracks are unexacted. What is meant by this is that there is no reason for the music to be extraordinarily complicated to convey its intentions. Pressure is built with occasional double kicks, emotions heightened with changes in expression, and vulnerability is coaxed in with arpeggiated slow sections. Its simpleness doesn’t come as a negative to the music but rather as a positive. It reinforces the solitary nature of the emotions being expressed. Monologue in ‘Maternal Absence’ is the finest display of this aloneness. There has been no one since the beginning that has loved, and still there is no one now. This is the overarching theme of the album.

From a listening standpoint this album isn’t going to become part of your daily rotation, but that is DSBM for you. Its focus is on artistry, mood, and vibration rather than catchy riffs, exact skill, and mosh parts. This album draws a slow nod to the music not exerted force. One could say something like a nice and easy cut with a razor and not a voracious stab. Experience this album for all that it is. It may not end up on your daily playlist, but Gølgaborg has crafted an album that truly sink into the minds of the listener.
