The Chamberlain – Dominus Noctis [EP]

the chamberlain – dominus noctis [ep]

Info

With experience in several acts including Aesthus, Malum and Norrhem, it’s no wonder that new Finnish band The Chamberlain sounds far from rookies to the scene. On their first EP ‘Dominus Noctis’ the band presents a take on Black Metal that didn’t fit with any of their other projects, which is symphonic Black Metal with a strong Heavy Metal guitar riff basis. The symphonic synthesizers in ‘Intro: Dominus Noctis’ already hint at a strong influence of Emperor, but for most of the other tracks they take a little bit more of a modest role, serving as background symphonies not unlike how Dimmu Borgir used them on for instance ‘Enthrone Darkness Triumphant’. And maybe it’s just coincidence, but the tone of the keys in ‘Army of Shadows’ reminds me of Children Of Bodom. While that band also wore their Heavy Metal influences strong on their sleeves, that’s also where the comparison ends. The Chamberlain doesn’t resort to high-flying guitar work or dominant keyboard leads, but instead opts for a strong band sound, epic in groove and symphony and fierce in guitar sound where melodies play a submissive role. Symphonic Black Metal with a chilling atmosphere and more grooving rhythms that show a decent bit of bite from time to time as well. The falsetto in ‘Army of Shadows’, the catchy ‘Moonlight Countess’ and the Dimmu Borgir-like ‘Succubus in Habitus’ rank among a few memorable moments on the EP, a release that should find enough traction with the increased recent interest in symphonic Black Metal. ‘Dominus Noctis’ is a solid first release, but I personally hope that the band finds a bit more of a distinctive sound on their future releases to stand out amongst the hordes of bands playing a similar genre.
