Methmaggot – Guidance from Madness

methmaggot – guidance from madness

Info

Ever since War Metal started to unleash its filthy spawn across the world (some fourty years ago), it was strictly reserved for the West, so while South American bands were fighting with bands from United States and Canada over which one will be the undisputed leader of the genre, just so all three of them occasionally got punched in the face by Australian bands, Asia didn’t really seem like a breeding ground for it. There was a couple of attempts from the Philippines and, but generally, most of these attempts were futile (even though Asia has always been known for its abundant grind scene).

But as it appears, that was just a good front. When, about a decade ago underground metal started to lose its edge and started to turn into a bedroom project or just a ‘suitable’ excuse why mid class kids (and adults) are doing a shitton of drugs in broad daylight, Asian supremacy started to form. Firstly, India and Sri Lanka delivered some of the bands which have already gained the moniker ‘elite’ (Genocide Shrines, Tetragrammacide, Kapala), soon to be followed by bands from eastern Asia… yet somehow, South Korea doesn’t really seem to be one of the fertile ground for this very niche genre of the metal spectrum. But luckily, I’m always happy to be proven wrong in this question.

Methmaggot is another brainchild of Intolerance Dictator, who has made himself recognizable as a musician in Aek Gwi, Biological Warfare and Shrapnel of Malediction AND a visual artist (under moniker Vhan). This time around he’s joined by vocalist 21-760A8736 (yes, I understand names, especially the obnoxious names musicians in this genre call themselves are ridiculously overrated and yes, I understand people are just numbers in most databases, but seriously…) to create some of the most deadly, poisonous concoction of black, death, grind and noise, solely relying on bass and programming (since War metal is not fond of solos or any sort of rhythm, the guitars have slowly been losing its importance in this particular music), generously spiced up with distorted, painfully hateful vocal delivery. And obviously, ‘hatred’ is still the main driving force behind the idea. As Intolerance Dictator describes the initial idea: ‘We’re hateful beings, like maggots. We find the truth in hate and our happiness in madness.’

The use of maggots might serve another purpose here. Maggots are exclusively goal oriented – Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. (yes, there was a pop metal band which used this combination of words as their album title and the idea of people being maggots, but they most certainly didn’t sound like they actually meant it), while not paying attention to anything else. Achieving the goal over dead bodies, or simply as the evolution points it out ‘Survival of the Fittest’. Now try adding meth (as a substitute or better put, synonym for madness) to this whole idea and you just got yourself and absolutely destructive force which will eventually exterminate the human race and leave no trace of humanity ever existing behind itself.

These days it’s completely irrelevant where the band comes from and how they create their music, if the music makes it clear at what they want to achieve and then watch them go over any obstacle to reach their goal, not fussing over the dead who had the misfortune of being in their way. Since Methmaggot are a young and promising band, we need them to be consistent. Consistency, or better put the lack of it, is usually what destroys most young and promising bands on this side of the metal spectrum. And yet again, I love being proven wrong in this question, therefore I hope Methmaggot destroys my ears in the coming years with becoming more hateful and destructive (which might be difficult to imagine right now, considering how hateful and destructive they already are… only time will tell).
