Kurjuus – Ihmisyydestä Luopunut [EP]

kurjuus – ihmisyydestä luopunut [ep]

Info

With Hämärä’s steady working pace you know you have to be on your qui vive, a new Kurjuus release (or that of a related project) is always lurking. And just as you can rest assured that there will always be a new Kurjuus EP, you also don’t have to worry that it will sound so much different from what you are used to. Kurjuus’ game has always been that of crude and Raw Black Metal. Yet, if you to take a deeper dive might hear a few differences here and there, but over the last few release it is evidently clear that Hämärä is not about to stray from his musical path.

‘Ihmisyydestä Luopunut’, roughly translating to “Renounced Humanity” is not only serving us with a logical follow-up to the band’s preceding work, it also fits seamlessly to its title. This latest EP harkens back to the most crude and very essential core of Black Metal: its minimalistic approach and hateful spirit truly captures the primal energy of the genre. In just under half an hour, somewhat the standard length for almost any Kurjuus release, we are again treated to simple rhythms, eerie melodies, hoarse and deranged vocals and the almost Punk-like riffs.

The bareboned character of the music still has so much in common with the visionary work of Ildjarn, Yet, throughout the entire back catalogue Hämärä has been playing with certain degrees of melodicism, a Folk/Pagan edge or even a -almost- Heavy Metal sort of flair to its songs. ‘Ihmisyydestä Luopunut’ is way more of a basic affair, it acts as a guardian of the ancient values of the Black Metal genre. Of the Black Metal phenomenon, which is more than just the music. Not so much the cosmetic packaging of the music, but the feeling that should accompany it, the purity and uninhibited impulsive energy. Kurjuus, like few others, knows how to capture that passion so well; this raw new EP is a renewed reminder of the beauty of ugliness.
