Sanguinary Emperor is one of E.X.’s many musical endeavors, someone I’ve had the pleasure of doing business with, under his project EJXA. Most of these projects are in a more straightforward (though particularly brutal) Black Metal style, whereas Sanguinary Emperor incorporates heavy Death Metal and Doom Metal influences.

All of these styles are stirred together to create an absolutely crushing display of extreme metal prowess. The guitars reminiscent of Sunn O))) and other drone metal masters like Earth or Boris, blending seamlessly with a brutally thick bass tone underneath. The drums pound away at sluggish and angry rhythms with minimal embellishment, providing a strong backbone for this sludgey style. The cadence almost feels ritualistic, like if a Gregorian choir turned around and started burning their own church. The vocals, like everything else, are drenched in cacophonous reverb which blends everything together into a singular unit dedicated to the annihilation of your eardrums. The closest comparison one could make would be Abruptum’s cult-classic ‘Obscuritatem Advoco Amplectère Me,’ but even that doesn’t quite compare.

This demo is only a taste of what Sanguinary Emperor has to offer, and I can only imagine what an incredible experience this kind of music is in a live setting. I eagerly await what this band has coming next, and I hope they get the recognition they deserve for doing something genuinely unique and innovative in a genre in desperate need of fresh, heavy sounds. Long live Bestial Black Doom!!
