Demos, unreleased material and rehearsals will always be my personal favorite way of getting to know a band (and forming my opinion about it). No image, no fronting, no gimmicks, no production, no bullshit. Just bands playing how they want to play something, without any prettying up. Dirty, messy, honest.

Now imagine this: One evening you walk into your basement. You turn on that dim light bulb which you’ve been telling yourself you have to replace for something which would actually light up the crammed up room. The light now barely covers the neatly stashed away moms preserved vegetables and condiments, which look interesting in this light. You can also see some not so neatly stored boxes of crap you’ve been telling yourself you’ll throw away. But that’s as much as you can see, because of that pesky light bulb.

And then all of the sudden, the light goes out and even though you’re pretty sure it can’t actually be, you get a feeling something behind those boxes moved. You feel a freezing cold gust of wind, even though you’re underground. You feel like something is watching you and even though you’re telling yourself it can’t see you because it’s too dark for you to see anything. For some reason you’re reminded of that time your asshole cousin locked you in a closet while you were playing hide and seek. Even though you were in a closet for only a couple of minutes, it was dark and scary and your vivid childhood imagination quickly started forming images in that complete darkness. Those still haunt you to this day whenever you’re uncomfortable. But this is worse. You already feel that darkness is coming for you from that corner behind the boxes. You can’t run away because, as already described, your cellar is a mess. You could trip over something or break something while trying to run away from it. You’re stuck and the darkness starts to swallow you.

I apologize for writing fables instead of usual reviews, but I still consider this music to be the ultimate atmosphere builder. Yes, it’s fast and dirty. Yes, it’s chaotic and unpredictable. Yes, it is down right scary when you least expect it (you didn’t really think the light would go out when you went to the basement, did you?). ‘Atmospheric’ is not just soothing sounds which help you go to sleep, it’s also that grinding fear, the feeling of horror when pushed into the unknown, the adrenaline rush everyone gets when they are scared. This is exactly how Satanik Goat Ritual sounds in their finest moments, promptly recorded on demos and rehearsals and distributed on several demos and splits. This band has yet to release a proper full length, even though they have been active since 2009 and have had a very busy period with touring and releasing new material about a decade ago

While Satanik Goat Ritual never made it to the ‘legendary status’ (which is a horrible shame as they belong right there with those vegetables and condiments) most of the bands created today strive for, they are standing proud at the side of the bands who have achieved it, support things done the old way and are one of the most important bands on the Hell Paso Scene, which already spawned gems like Nyogthaeblisz and Obeisance. Their records are a pain in the ass to get if you don’t know someone, who knows someone, who might have heard it, who knows someone who might actually have it, as it’s usually released in 5 to 300 copies world wide and can only be bought directly from the band. ‘Resurrektion Ruined’ was released in the late 2024 at a Forged in Defiance Fest in Texas in a very limited edition and there’s also a limited edition tape with a couple of surprises added to it scheduled for the near future.

That IS how you do underground. Completely DIY, no people between the artist and the buyer, almost no promotion, from one fan to another. So, if you haven’t familiarized yourself with this band, better do you homework now and go through this release as it includes some of their most stellar creations done so far.
