Going into the holiday season and I was thinking what a time to break into the old guys from, Unaussprechlichen Kulten. An HP Lovecraft piece of literature that is said to contain information on cults that worship pre-human deities such as Ghatanothoa and includes hieroglyphs relating to the latter. What we didn’t know is that it was actually songs written by some abominable beasts in Chile!
Without a doubt we all know the legends that are Unaussprechlichen Kulten (btw I’ve typed this out everytime, an impressive feat, I know) These Chilean savages have put out great records time and time again giving us a dissonant, ominous, weird, cult like style of death metal that keeps us coming back for more and god damnit, “Teufelsbücher” is no different. Blending all of their style into mind warping speeds this isn’t for the faint of heart.
Delving into the abyss that lies before you, you are immediately hit with a slow build that is unsettling to give you an idea of how this entire record is gonna be and then, boom! Blasts to the face with no holds barred riffage and vocals that sound like if Lovecraft’s dead body were to say a few words right now. With only 5 more songs left you might think, “I don’t know how much more I can take!” And yet here we are hanging on to every note and wouldn’t even dare turn it off.
Frozen in time and captured in the web, “Keziah Lilith Medea” starts fast hitting you with guitar squeals and then slow guitars start with sinister tones overlaying it’s like you’re stuck in paralysis unable to comprehend on what’s happening as Joseph hits you with the most insane type of snarled high pitched vocals that are just so fucking evil sounding, this song goes above and beyond on the weirdness factor which makes it so damn good.
The style of this band never ceases to amaze me with such a unique sound of their own they really stand out from the pack as they always have and likely always will. It’s a demanding listen in it’s on right but pays off to the max giving you such an uneasy feeling that you can’t find that with any other release this year and then you can’t turn it off. This is up there with the bands best works and if you’re already familiar with them then it’s 10000% for you and you’ll love it. GREAT RECORD and I gladly put it on my end of the year list.
