Vaamatar – Medievalgeist

Info

This bi-coastal (Los Angeles and New York respectively, from the United States) two man (well, man and woman) Black Metal band started out their musical journey in the despicable year of 2020. Then just two short (or rather long, depending how it went for all of you) years later, in 2022, we are getting their debut full-length album in ‘Medievalgeist’. Which was released through Iron Bonehead Productions in different version of limited editions. But what do these two Black Metal beasts give us on ‘Medievalgeist’?

Well, what I said that they sound like on my review of the ‘Evil Witching Black Metal’ demo was that they happen to have a feeling of multiple waves of Black Metal combined into one cohesive, raw, unit. And I still rather feel that way but now it seemed that they have refined that and honed their sound into something that resembles mix of Watain and Summon with touches to their raw past still breaking through.

This is a big step up from demo both in terms of overall production, it’s still raw but a better sounding raw, and songwriting, it’s just much more cohesive and memorable. The potential was there on the demo and it honestly truly slapped but this full-length is just another step better in everything, especially the evolution and progression of Vaamatar. ‘Medievalgeist’ is a pretty damn good Black Metal album that will satisfy and excite a rather large number of fans of the Black Metal genre, no matter what sect, era or subgenre you love.
