After an EP, a digital split and a few singles, Ryan Wills felt he was ready recording and releasing his first full-length album with his solo Death Metal act Seven Doors. Seven Door’s ‘The Gates Of Hell’ EP from 2021 was already reviewed on our VM-Underground pages, aptly being described as “Fulci, zombies, horror, 90s Death Metal”. Well… that is still applies largely on this first full-length album.
It is all still very much about quite standard 90’s Death Metal, oh, and zombies and other random horror themed ideas. Wills does claim to be influenced by Asphyx, Gorguts and Skeletal Remains and that his music is very much fodder for any like minded people. And, to a large extent, that is quite accurate. Yet, it has to be said that Wills does not exactly have the same musical level of the Canadians of Gorguts, at all. The music is fairly simple and straight forward, omitting all the intriguing tempo changes and riff wizardry of Gorguts. Therefore a comparison with both Asphyx and Skeletal Remains is more in place. Despite not remotely sounding as complex as Gorguts and I personally find both Asphyx and Skeletal Remains extremely overrated, Seven Doors isn’t doing a bad job in forging some solid Death Metal out of its influences. Wills does add some decent leads and a few tempo changes as well, the real “problem” here is the rather flat sounding vocals and its one-dimensionalism, which makes the full 45 minutes a bit too much to sit through. So, not a bad album per se, yet maybe a bit too standard and drudging to get all too excited about.
