Impiety – Dominator [EP]

impiety – dominator [ep]

Info

After last year’s excellent ‘Formidonis Nex Cultus’, it pleases me immensely to see that Singapore’s Impiety are back already. OK, it’s just an EP, a mere fifteen minutes of Blackened Death-Thrash insanity, but I’d take a quarter hour of Impiety over seventy minutes of many of the others making a similar racket any day.

‘Dominator’ begins rather thoughtfully, by Impiety’s standards, with atmospheric sounds and the cries of battle, but as ever this is just the calm before the storm, and the break-neck drumming, dirty, horrible riffs and Satan’s own vocals were just biding their time before making an entrance half-way through ‘Introbliteration’. I do love it when Impiety make up words; ‘Introbliteration’ and ‘Slaughterror’ don’t quite reach the linguistic heights of ‘Sodomythical Frostgoats’, but they do indicate a band unafraid to push everything up to 11, defiant against those who would question them.

In terms of approach, ‘Dominator’ continues Impiety’s relentless journey further into death metal realms, with a lot of the riffs- on ‘Slaughterror Superiority’ and the title track, for example- evoking early US death metal in their for-the-throat simplicity and classic sound. ‘Formidonis’ made us expect a little more from guitarist Mike Priest, however, and he doesn’t let down the side by disavowing trickiness on this EP. The track ‘Dominator’ showcases some flamboyance, and while the production doesn’t quite have enough balls to keep the groove rolling entirely smoothly, there are plenty of interesting moments that don’t quite fit into a classic Death Metal template. And of course, being Impiety, everything is so dirty and blackened and growling and disgusting anyway that no one can describe ‘Dominator’ without referencing all three genres of Black, Death and Thrash metal.

The version of Sarcafago’s ‘The Black Vomit’ is much more exciting than previous Impiety covers, and was clearly a pleasure to record. Additional speed and filth make this a worthy homage to a band which have clearly shaped Impiety’s vision. Closer ‘At War With Temujin’ has more of a swagger, fitting for a band who have created another hateful, thunderous release which will please all of their fans. The latest line-up incarnation of Impiety is proving to be a very brutal beast indeed.
