In Aeternum – Curse Of Devastation [EP]

in aeternum – curse of devastation [ep]

Info

With varying succes Swedish band In Aeternum have spawned records on mankind, through various labels and with an ever changing line-up. And though they never got the recognition that bands like Necrophobic, Naglfar, Dissection and Dark Funeral got In Aeternum does have something to offer. It might have something to do with their previous labels, as they have said in several interviews in the past, or maybe something else, but their music have always been rather strong. Their last outing is this sixteen minutes of catchy and melodic mixture of black and death metal, on CD released by Pulverised Records and rereleased on 7” record by the ever-strong Blood Harvest label.

It has to be said that this is not quite the best of time to release this kind of music, about ten years ago melodic black/death was definitely more popular than it is today. If the band had a hard time to stand out in the past, it will only become harder. The music on this EP might even sound a bit dated here and there. BUT, quality never gets old. I see myself getting back at some of the records that were released back in the heydays of this genre and with these records in mind, this “Curse Of Devastation” can easily compete with those. It is actually an act of sheer bravery of the band to stand by their own ideals and musical taste. The stubborn members of the band can find them shoulder to shoulder with bands with the same problems like fellow country-men Lord Belial.

On the three new tracks on this four-tracker In Aeternum sound more determined than they have done the past few years. Especially drummer Perra Karlsson (Nominon, Nex, Bergraven, Serpent, ex-Serpent, ex-Altar etc.) gives the band an extra push in the right direction. Tighter than before the band knows how to keep the listener’s attention, which was the problem with some of their older records. The fourth track, “Reaper In Black” a redone track from their 1999 album “Forever Blashpemy”, might be a little needless and seems to be filler for a three-tracker. Another new song was a better idea, for sure.

With all their problems behind, including the label- and personnel issues and even a lawsuit by Mel Gibson who is said to have sued the band for the unrightfully use of an image from his “The Passion Of The Christ”-movie on their 2004 EP “No Salvation”, the band should be ready for their next long-player. Which is to be released… when exactly?
