Ripped to Shreds – 亂 (Luan)

ripped to shreds – 亂 (luan)

Info

In a sea of redundant, imitative, and duplicate OSDM bands, Ripped to Shreds stands out quiet distinctively as their sophomore full-length “亂 (Luan)” do not offer monotonous tracks that would put your ears into Déjà vu.

Keeping Entombed, Nihilist, Dismember, Desultory, Nirvana 2002 as influence, Ripped to Shreds manages to compose songs that are filled with interesting patterns and unpredictable shifts. Upon listening to the record one would strongly taste the classic flavor of old school Swedish death metal throughout its entirety. Apart from the composition, the production is also reminiscent of late 80s/early 90s Swedish death metal releases. From time to time the listener would find themselves in between heart stabbing blastbeats and fiercely intense riffings that pierce like surgical steel. It does have melodic riffs that are not pretty but rather poignant yet aggressive. This album does have its own “doom” segments that are redolent of Asphyx and bands alike. The lyrical aspect is loosely based on an ancient Chinese war-themed folktale.

To avoid confusion, Ripped to Shreds is not a Swedish/Chinese/Japanese Death Metal band. This project has one main member and a few live session members both in the US and Taiwan. Few months ago this status was posted on the band’s official Facebook page: “I’m not sure why I’ve seen this misconception a ton of times by now, but Ripped to Shreds is not a Japanese band. I’m American, parents from Taiwan. I sing about Chinese history shit, not Japan.

In conclusion, this album consists enough variations and erraticism to maintain the listeners interest. Give it a listen if you have not already, it is a brilliant release that needs to be praised by those into the style. (Osmani)
