The first and only time Cemetery Lights graced our pages was with their debut EP, ‘Lemuralia’ (2018). In the meantime we are several releases on. This record, ‘Consumption’, is Cemetery Lights’ second full-length album and nicely showcases The Corpse’s musical journey with his brainchild.
In the review of the debut EP, VM-Underground chief editor Ricardo talks about a good serving of extreme metal with roots deep in southern Europe, in the Greek and Italian Black Metal scenes to be precise. Now, echoes of bands like Mortuary Drape and Necromantia can still be heard on ‘Consumption’, but it is also clear that The Corpse have gradually moved in a slightly different direction. For the most part, that typical southern European vibe has been traded in for a much more stripped-down sound. The result is a melange somewhere between an occult atmosphere and a distinct Punk-like vibe. A fine example is the more bass-heavy Barathrum-like ‘Abide With Me’ which is followed by an instrumental and keyboard-driven interlude where the Greek spirit clearly resurfaces. This blend, with the centre of gravity clearly leaning more towards a bareboned kind of Black Metal, fits extremely well into the current roster of Nuclear War Now! Productions (with such bands like Vengeance Sorcery and Pan-American Native Front) who, along with a good selection of underground acts of today’s Black Metal scene, are making the transition to a somewhat more Folk and Punk-driven purity of the genre.
