Mortify’s ‘Grotesque Buzzsaw Defilement’, originally released by Obliteration Records in January 2021, has seen several reissues by a huge slew of different labels. The latest one is done on good old vinyl. This less-than-10-minutes EP has been pressed on a green single-sided 12” vinyl by Psychocontrol Records from Czechia. If you take in consideration that this EP, clocking somewhere between 9 and 10 minutes, has 13 tracks on it and take a close look at the title and cover art, you know what you will find even before sinking the needle in this EP’s grooves. Yes, total Swedish buzzsaw Grindcore frenzy. Combining Grindcore and Swedish Death Metal isn’t exactly new as bands like Necrony and General Surgery (not entirely coincidentally both Swedish) were already there from quite early on, but the idea never seems to get old. So why change a winning formula? So, yes, Mortify finds itself exactly betwixt and between those two early Swedish originators of the Swedish Carcass sound. So, nope, not exactly original, ‘Grotesque Buzzsaw Defilement’ brings you exactly zero of anything you haven’t heard before or what you would not expect, but, frankly, that is exactly where its strength lies: these Japanese serve you with your next well-executed Gory Grinding Death Metal fix.
