Fleshrot – Unburied Corpse

fleshrot – unburied corpse

Info

After the band’s eponymous 2020 demo, the Texas Death Metal band Fleshrot returns for their debut album. Those who heard that 4-track demo, disgorged some Fulci-inspired Death Metal of the simpler kind, but regardless, but it tasted as good as any leftover body part after a cannibal party.

On the band’s debut album, ‘Unburied Corpse’, the band continues the musical path chosen on their demo. A path filled with filth and gore, but at the same time it sounds a little less creepy and sinister. That haunting sort of Fulci-ambience is gone for the biggest part and what is left is mid-paced Death Metal which, despite being well played, sounds a bit flat. Rather chunky riffs and a meaty guitar sound form the basis on which the album is built, the basic pounding drums and a deep gurgling vocal delivery are sealing the deal.

Musically it has a solid foundation of classic Death Metal, there’s a bit of early Cannibal Corpse, Incantation and Autopsy doing their tricks, but it has been topped off with a more modern day sort of Death Metal. With this hotchpotch of all genre (re)defining elements and a full and almost bombastic production it all blends down into a rather boggy Death Metal swamp. Blubbery and vile, murky and ugly.

Yet, a feeling of averageness is hard to shake off. The bigger and excellent organic sound, which definitely contributes to the album gaining more lethality, is not able to make up fully for the lack of that great cinematic character of their demo. But it does save the album from utter mediocrity though. Indeed, ‘Unburied Corpse’ is a decent debut album, but, frankly, I hoped for a little more than that.
