Desultory – Counting Our Scars

desultory – counting our scars

Info

This band has left its mark in the history of Swedish Death Metal scene with three albums for Metal Blade – ‘Into Eternity’ from 1993, ‘Bitterness’ from 1994 and the controversial ‘Swallow The Snake’ from 1996 after which Desultory was put to rest.

But there is no rest for the wicked and the guys are back again with their fourth CD titled ‘Counting Our Scars’. An excellent CD I would say!

The treasure here lies in the form of nine dark, heavy and melodic tracks of first class Swedish Death Metal. ‘Counting Our Scars’ is produced in Necromorbus Studio by Tore Stjerna who has done hell of a job – the sound is powerful and clear.

The first thing that impressed me in this album was the outstanding drum work of Thomas Johnson. He destroys his drum kit on the fast parts but is also able to play at a slow pace like on the track ‘The Moment Is Gone’. Hekan Morberg masterfully creates aggressive riffs with strong and memorable melodies inside. His riffing is supported by the pumping bass of the former Unanimated bassist Johan Bohlin. Just hear ‘In A Cage’ or ‘Broken Halo’ – their melodic parts will be stuck in your head for days. The harsh vocals of Klas Morberg are passionate and to some extent depressive which fits perfectly with Desultory’s music.

As a whole ‘Counting Our Scars’ is close to a perfect album. It’s absolutely obligatory to hear it in case you love bands like At The Gates, Eucharist or the old Dark Tranquility. Desultory are back with a vengeance and their weapon of choise is one of the best melodic Death Metal albums from the last few years!
