From Bulgaria we can finally listen to the debut album of Ork. A band which was formed back in 1995 and took their time to develope themselves to what they are now. After three demo’s, one split EP and a promo, they signed to Folter Records.
I recieved this cd in summer ’01 but it was released almost a year ago, so I don’t know to call this still a new album. I did not really know what to expect from this band as I never heard their previous material, but when I first listened to this album I knew it was a good one.
Folter Records prefer to label this band as “Medieval Assault of Pure Atmospheric Black Metal” and I can agree with that. Don’t expect lots of keyboards because all the song are guitar orientated. The riffs and solo’s by guitarist Frosthammer are great, they make this a perfect album instead of good.
Musically Ork plays their Black Metal in the vein of Dark Funeral at the time of their first cd, but only in the fast parts and with a less polished sound. Maybe the production could be done better because on the silent parts (intro’s etc.) you can hear some cracks. Another band which reminds me to Ork is Maniac Butcher, especially their later albums.
At the time of this release the band allready played with bands such as Rotting Christ and Darkseed and I think their music is suitable enough for some great live shows. I don’t know if you will hear the keyboards when they play on stage as the guitarist also handles the keys on this album. ‘Black Soul’ Desire is a great song with smooth guitar lines, only that song makes it allready worth buying.
Ork has recorded their new album in July of this year thus it won’t take long before we’ll get the second strike by this great newcomer.
