Putrescent – Inhuman Infestation [EP]

putrescent – inhuman infestation [ep]

Info

Just about every other night when I am laying in bed and having a generally hard time falling asleep, I like to peruse the new arrivals section in Death or Black Metal on the good ol’ Bandcamp page. A lot of the time there is the a menagerie of a lot of the same old kind of stuff (musical clones), re-releases or just stuff that is tagged wrong either for exposure or simply by mistake. But every once in a while there is a release that peaks my interest in more than one way. And ‘Inhuman Infestation’ by Putrescent here is damn good (as an example and as an EP) example of just one of those.

First and foremost, there happens to be three major factors that drew me to this EP and those are; it’s Death Metal, the cover art and the overall runtime, and I’ll break those down for ya. First off, Death Metal that is Death Metal, instant win, so we move on to the cover. And I mean, come on, just come on and look at that cover. It just screams disgustingly delicious Death Metal while also just being sick as hell art on its own. How can that not make you want to check this out by itself? The next factor is the runtime, three tracks at just over thirteen minutes. Who doesn’t have thirteen minutes for Death Metal? And when you are just doom scrolling later at night the more immediate and shorter EPs are the much more attractive they become. But enough about that. Let’s move on.

Now, I have never heard of this band from Los Angeles, California in the United States, Putrescent, but then again I’m not to sure many people here actually have. From what I have gathered, this is a relatively new band and I am only guessing that because this is their debut release. Plus there is no real info on when they formed as band, so I say they are new. But the members are not new to Metal, no, plus two members are also from the killer Insineratehymn, so you know it’s gotta be good. Right? But I’ve been reading along this long, what does this band’s EP actually sound like Ben?

Well, dear reader I will not keep you in suspense any longer, for Putrescent are a Old School Death Metal. Old School Death Metal that just so happens to sound like a mix of Incantation and Bloodbath with elements of Doom and some techy runs ala Death thrown in for good measure. But to really take the easy route with this one I will just take a quote directly from their Bandcamp page; “3 tracks of downtuned, savagely discordant riffage and putrid slime. An exhibition of total filth.” But is it good?

Fuck yeah it’s good. On ‘Inhuman Infestation’ Putrescent have created three extremely strong, well written and flawlessly performed Death Metal gems. Where they hit the mark over and over again while avoiding the trappings and failings of many bands trying to do the Old School Death Metal thing.

So, yeah, I could have just given you their quote along with the link to the Bandcamp page accompanied by a huge Fuck Yeah and that would have been all you really needed. But what fun would that been for me?
