Scalpture – Feldwärts

scalpture – feldwärts

Info

German Death Metal band Scalpture continues to innovate within their niche with their third full-length album, ‘Feldwärts’. As the successor to their 2020 album ‘Eisenzeit’, the band seamlessly continues to explore World War I themes while expanding their sonic repertoire. The new album sees the group skillfully blending their traditional Death Metal foundation with more haunting melodies and a desolate atmosphere.

Despite operating in a subgenre flooded with bands trying to replicate the unique intensity of war-themed Death Metal, Scalpture differentiates itself with its exceptional musicianship. Their effective alternation between brutal riffs and somber melodies ensures that songs stick in listeners’ minds and provide an engaging listening experience from start to finish.

Vocalist Thorsten Pieper’s performance is a standout, with his lower-pitched growls that echo the raspy tones of Martin van Drunen. His voice, full of energy and intensity, adds substantially to the power of ‘Feldwärts’. The album also showcases a variety in vocal delivery, with ‘Ils n’ont pas passé’ featuring singing and chanting sections that amplify the triumphant vibe of the track.

‘Challenging the Empire’ adds further diversity with higher-pitched screams. Although the album’s promotional material does not specify whether these are produced by a band member or guest vocalist, the interplay between the high and low vocal ranges creates an impressive dynamic that is sure to captivate listeners.

Scalpture reaffirms with ‘Feldwärts’ that it’s possible to honor the legacy of classic bands while carving out a unique identity. For fans of Death Metal that wields power through both swift and mid-paced tempos and incorporates somber and haunting melodies, this album is likely to find a permanent spot in your rotation. Although F.D.A. Records might not have extensive reach in North America, their consistent delivery of quality Death Metal, exemplified by Scalpture’s latest effort, deserves recognition and appreciation.
