‘Caustic Maelstrom’ is a solid Death Metal release that grabs the listener from the very first spin. In Obscurity Revealed brings together the genre’s defining elements: guttural vocals, crushing guitars, well-executed solos, and a rhythm section that moves seamlessly between blast beats and slower, more measured passages. Beyond simply delivering these familiar ingredients, however, the band manages to give each composition its own identity, building an album that maintains its intensity from beginning to end.

The guitars stand out for their harsh distortion without sacrificing clarity; on the contrary, this allows the strength of their structures and the development of each song to come through. There is a constant sense of movement: guitar lines guide the compositions through shifts in rhythm and intensity, while the drums respond with a well-structured display of blast beats, double bass drumming, and rolls. Although less prominent, the bass provides a solid foundation for the other instruments, maintaining a dark presence closely aligned with the guitars. The vocals, meanwhile, fit naturally into each composition, reinforcing its character without disrupting the instrumental flow.

‘Engulfed in ‘Caustic Maelstrom” is one of the album’s most representative tracks. Its main riff remains recognizable throughout the song, yet evolves through variations in intensity and register that give it a distinct identity. The solos and high-speed distorted passages complement this structure, recalling some of the more classic expressions of Death Metal.

‘Necrotically Gray Hand’ is another highlight of the album. Its measured introduction gives way to a blast beat-driven acceleration, before returning to a dense passage and building up the intensity once again. Its structure is memorable, and the way it shifts between these different passages showcases the band’s ability to deliver a crushing song without sacrificing nuance. It is an excellent example of Death Metal in its most straightforward form: no labels, no compromises.

‘Obsidian Bleeding’, on the other hand, opens with a progressive introduction that suddenly erupts into a burst of brutality, accompanied by the arrival of the vocals. The song offers brief moments of respite before regaining its intensity. One of In Obscurity Revealed’s greatest strengths lies precisely in these shifts: rhythmic changes signal new bursts of violence, even when we can already sense that the calm will not last. The result is a dynamic and exceptionally well-executed track.

Interestingly, ‘Necrotically Gray Hand’ and ‘Obsidian Bleeding’, two of the album’s strongest tracks, had already appeared on a demo released in 2023. Listening to those earlier versions, it is clear that both songs already had considerable appeal. However, the production on ‘Caustic Maelstrom’ brings out their strengths and gives them a much more powerful dimension.

While the first half of the album contains several of its most memorable moments, the second half offers other aspects of the band’s musicianship, particularly through its longer compositions. The intensity never drops; rather, these tracks provide more room to appreciate the instrumental arrangements and the cohesion between the musicians. The closing track retains the album’s full force, offering one last opportunity to bang your head.

I believe ‘Caustic Maelstrom’ represents an important step in In Obscurity Revealed consolidation as a band. Not because their previous releases lacked quality or failed to showcase their musicians’ abilities, but because production, songwriting, and the cohesion between the current lineup seem to reach a particularly strong point on this release. The lineup brings together musicians with experience across different corners of the Mexican metal scene, alongside the founding member who remains in charge of vocals and bass. The result is a sound the band had already been developing, now delivered with a particularly powerful level of execution. This is especially significant at a time when the group has managed to expand its presence beyond the national scene.

If you’re looking for high-caliber Death Metal, ‘Caustic Maelstrom’ is an excellent choice. With memorable compositions, crushing execution, and seamless transitions between different levels of intensity, In Obscurity Revealed deliver one of the most interesting Mexican Death Metal releases of 2026.
