A new review section: Buried by Time And Dust

We added a new review section, coincidentally another Mayhem reference following 'The Past is Alive', with the title 'Buried by Time and Dust'. Over the years, a lot of promos have been gathering dust simply because a fresh wave of promos arrived the following month and they were consigned to oblivion. We will review them here to make a clear distinction with our other reviews. We will also use it to complete a discography in terms of reviews. Feel free to contact us if you would like to submit your music or would like to join the staff.

Personal Records have just released an impressive new CD that compiles both ‘The Amethyst Fortress’ and ‘The Moonstone Temple’ EP’s by Austrian/Swedish fantasy and Gothic fiction inspired Black Metal duo Carathis. Right from the off this double EP release ensnares and engages to the fullest extent. There is something deeply intoxicating about the balance this duo has found between their simple yet catchy drumming style and the gratifying synth harmonies that run through the length of this release, and its so satisfying to listen to that everything else just falls into place effortlessly. With those two elements forming a solid and endearing backdrop, from there Carathis move forward with a graceful yet hard edged sound that lets the guitar melodies soar whilst the vocals let loose a stream of abrasive, raw sounding lyrics that oddly mesh with more rhythmic side of the bands sound really well. Don’t be mistaken into thinking this is some toothless atmospheric journey into fantasy inspired shoegaze territory though. this is pure unadulterated Black Metal that has a real bite to the riffs and sets a frenetic and marauding pace through the use of bombastic drumming and crushing bass play. All in all an urgent, ruthless display in technical Black Metal savagery with some wonderful fantasy inspired synth harmonies throughout. Highly recommended.
