Coming from Slovakia, this little beast called Goholor delivers the kind of record that smells like a basement, an amplifier on its last legs and some good old-school blasphemy. Dark, aggressive and straight-to-the-point Black/Death Metal, with sharp guitars, solid changes of pace and drums that definitely aren’t here to ask for permission.
What stands out the most is the way they mix the violence of Death Metal with that cold, evil atmosphere of Black Metal. There are fast and furious moments, but also heavier parts where the guitars take on an almost cavernous tone. ‘Nihilistic Torments’ closes the album like an avalanche: blast beats, razor-sharp riffs and a fucking nasty sense of chaos.
They’re not inventing a new genre, and they don’t need to. They know how to bring their influences together without losing any of their punch. If you’re into Extreme Metal with an organic production, rotten-sounding riffs and a good dose of darkness, and as well enjoy Belphegor, Behemoth (early era), Immortal and Gates of Ishtar, Goholor is definitely worth digging into.
