I’ve really been into a slower, more atmospheric style of Death Metal as of lately, and I happened to run into Hrob’s debut album, ‘Brána chladu’ at the right time. After releasing an amazing demo in 2023, they returned to showcase their first full-length effort on the 27th of April 2026.
As any Death/Doom band should, Hrob manages to put you into a vegetative state with their slow and heavy riffs that are often interrupted by parts where they unleash the carnage upon the listener’s ears with tremolo-picked riffs and blast beats, in such a way that creates a perfect balance between the slow, rotting madness and the pummeling aggression. They take things further by adding quite a creepy vibe with occasional clean guitar parts and melodic guitar leads that serve the songs a whole lot better than any of the shredding madness you usually see in Death Metal.
The listener can feel tension throughout the whole album thanks to the great songwriting. The band seems to know exactly what they are going for and they totally nailed it. The cover art is amazing and it really fits the cold, desperate and crushing atmosphere of the tracks. Everything on this album is delivered in Hrob’s native language, something I started seeing more and more in the extreme subgenres of Metal in the last couple of years but to be completely honest, ‘Brána chladu’ would not have the same charm if sung in English, since the usage of Slovak adds to the mysterious element of the album, at least for those who don’t speak this language.
‘Brána chladu’” is definitely one of the more unique Death Metal releases of 2026, and I can guarantee that if you are into slow-paced Death Metal like Incantation or Disembowelment and you enjoy a bigger emphasis on atmosphere, you should do yourself a favour and check out Hrob’s debut album.
