Aedes – Odious Imprecation [EP]

aedes – odious imprecation [ep]

Info

Finland is fine land, at least for what it means to the Metal underground. A thousand monsters have risen from the thousand lakes. Back in the early 90’s, the Finish Death Metal scene had plentiful to offer, Demilich, Demigod, Convulse, Rippikoulu, Depravity, Abhorrence, Purtenance… the legacy seemingly never ends. In recent years, Finish Death Metal has resurrected itself from the grave with bands like Disguised Malignance, Desecresy and Krypts. Even some old bands rose from their coffins. Aedes is on the rise too. A new band whose DNA is firmly rooted within the ancient Death Metal scene. ‘Odious Imprecation’ serves as their introduction to the scene. Will it die premature death or will it yield a long rotting future?

‘Odious Imprecation’ consists of four songs, but it is hard to view all four songs as equal contributors to the end result. The first two songs fall in the vein of ‘Domination’ era Morbid angel meets ‘Left Hand Path’ Entombed. ‘Heretical Rebirth’ and ‘Portraits to Hell’ showcase pure Death Metal, with little room to deviate beyond the boundaries of the genre. Though the first two songs are flawless in their own right, they hold little thrills to make Aedes stand out.

‘Merging into Madness and ‘Cosmic Void Portal’, on the other hand, lean more to atmospheric Death Metal. These songs are not only slower and longer in length, but also feel more developed. Both incorporating a broader soundscape with the additions of clean guitars, ghostly keyboards and a well throughout song structure. If it weren’t for Riku Ryynänen shouty death growls, you’d hardly have guessed the two halves of this EP were created by the same band. The vocals, by the way, stand out positively in that they’re reminiscent of Mark Grewe and/or LG Petrov.

Aedes has entered the scene with their good but inconsistent ‘Odious Imprecation’. Given that this is a newly formed band, it makes sense that they’re still searching for their own sound. It wouldn’t surprise me that the four songs are the first songs they’ve written together in the same chronological order as they’re presented. If Aedes continue carving out their own sound, they might have a promising future ahead of them. The last two songs are definitely the standout tracks here. Personally, I can only hope Aedes will pursue this style going further.
