ColdWorld is a band that has been synonymous with loneliness and despair since its inception in 2005 with the debut EP ‘TheStarsAreDeadNow’. Since then, mastermind and sole member Georg Börner has channeled these various feelings and emotions through numerous releases throughout the years. ‘Isolation’ similarly follows in these footsteps but much heavier in terms of sheer emotion and atmosphere, creating music that actually makes you feel sad and alone.
The album was recorded during a majority of the COVID-19 shut down from 2020/2021 and with that tidbit of knowledge, it’s easy to understand the authentic mood of uncertainty and sadness. It’s Black Metal at its core but with an affinity for frostbitten post-rock/metal and doom metal laden tempos, which makes for an interesting journey! The Black Metal tremelo picking and shrieking vocals are there and accompanied by violins and ambient passages, the latter emphasizing emotions moreso than anything else.
Overall, Isolation is not an album that will appeal to the average black metal fan. It probably has more in common with bands such as Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai than the likes of Immortal, Bathory, etc. It is a solid album though, with a lot to digest. Through the ambience of the opener ‘Leere’ , to the melancholic instrumental ‘Soundtrack to Isolation’ with its emotive violins and the aptly titled ‘We Are Doomed’, a very Black Metal meets doom track, there really is something here for everyone! It truly is a beautiful record.
