Chaotian / Deiquisitor – Chaotian / Deiquisitor [Split]

chaotian / deiquisitor – chaotian / deiquisitor [split]

Info

Anyone who has been keeping an eye on the ever-thriving and ever-lively Danish Death Metal scene will be not surprised with this specific split release. Over the years both bands have gained quite a respectable reputation, and, for a change, not through undeserved hypes or social media warfare, but by steadily releasing quality Death Metal across the span of their respective careers. Add to that their alliance with the equally respected and revered Extremely Rotten Productions, it seems that anything they touch turn to gold… ehh, gore. Well, this latest offering, at the time of writing the cassette tape and vinyl versions (Night Shroud) is out already and the CD (Extremely Rotten Productions) will see the light of day shortly, is another chapter in both band’s glorious discographies.

Opening up is Chaotian. Admittedly, their demo was quite a bit of a difficult pill to swallow, these recordings were raw and gritty, making their slightly chaotic take on Death Metal a bit messy. Although that specific recording has grown on me since, it was their debut album from 2022 that fully impressed me. In the review for that record I mentioned that it might not have the same ingenuity of a band like Altars, and maybe that is still an accurate way to describe Chaotian, but they certainly have much to offer for those who like their Death Metal different from the standard bellowing “Caverncore” of these days. The band serves you with three songs that have more twists and turns that your average rollercoaster, with each change in tempo and eerie melody feels like a true treat. It is technical and progressive in the sense of song writing, but fortunately they never go into a Jazz-mode and they definitely stay away from showboating and senseless instrument wizardry. Consequently, this is just sophisticated Death Metal for those who enjoy adventurous, yet chunky Death Metal with enough bite and ties to the fundamentals of the Death Metal genre.

Deiquisitor, on the other side of the tape, has been a bit more active with recording and releasing material so there is a bit more material to compare these four new tracks with. Yet, the fortunate conclusion is that there is not much to compare. The trio has stayed true to their formula of quite raw sounding Death Metal with enough technical flair to keep you on your toes through the entire ride. It can even be said that the band benefits from a shorter playing time, as these songs do even convince me more than Deiquisitor’s already solid latest effort of ‘Apotheosis’, their fourth full-length album. The band has been together as the same three-piece since 2013 and that is actually something that you can hear. Not only the more “open” sound of a power trio, but also that they are well trained in working together. These few new tracks again prove Deiquisitor’s intricate song writing and impeccable playing.

It might have been no surprise that this split release would eventually see the light of day, as both bands obviously share a similar knack for rather unorthodox and technical Death Metal, the result is more smashing than anticipated beforehand. Chaotian delivers their brand of overwhelming and mature sounding Technical Death Metal and Deiquisitor, on the flipside, goes for a more pure, raw and energetic approach: aa splendid pairing.
