After ‘Squirm Beyond The Mortal Realm’ an album that seems to share a similar fate as Immolation’s ‘Failures For Gods’, Finland’s Morbific seems to be right back on the old track. Just like that damned Immolation album, ‘Squirm Beyond The Mortal Realm’ “suffered” from a rather strange and especially unexpected sound. While Immolation was mostly about the drum sound, Morbific was a bit more complex, not just the prominent clicky drum sound but the whole feel of the digital and compressed production that the album entailed. As with Immolation, I was also fine with Morbific’s new guise, I even felt that with ‘Squirm Beyond The Mortal Realm’ the band stood out from their peers.
Yet, there was not only praise for the Finn’s sophomore album, and frankly, I wasn’t surprised – it might have been too much to ask for fans from the early start to hop on this new train. But whether ‘Squirm Beyond The Mortal Realm’ was just an experiment or maybe an accident, I don’t know, but I do know that on this new 7” EP on Extremely Rotten Productions the band sounds as foul and disgusting as ever before.
In three tracks, together combining into just under ten minutes, we can worm our way through a mud-soaked swampy maelstrom of bludgeoning riffs and ultra-low grunts. It is evident that bands such as Mortician and Impetigo has left an lasting impression on the Finns. Something that was already obvious with the Impetigo-inspired logo, but the monotonous and rather one-dimensional tracks on this EP are yet another testament to both American bands’ musical legacy. The main difference though, was and still is, that Morbific has a way more organic sound compared to the bands in the Mortician-league. And it was exactly that sound that the previous album lacked, but now makes its glorious return. So, fans of the ultra-low, guttural and blubbery-sort of Death Metal can rejoice.
