Liturgy Of Desecration – Spiritual Anticosmic Warspells [EP]

The duo that make up Liturgy Of Desecration are finally back with a new EP, after being silent for a while since the release of 2020’s ‘Traverese The Threshold Of Blasphemia’. But although the twosome have gained a lot of musical experience in all their years of activity, with Reptilian Invocator Magister even being part of Dødheimsgard’s current live band, Liturgy Of Desecration fortunately still lacks any finesse or musical sense.

The band itself claims to play in the vein of Blasphemy, Beherit and Black Witchery and let that be exactly the nail in the coffin, albeit with an overtly more Death Metal sound than those three genre giants. While it does carry a slightly and evidently heavier Death Metal vibe, it does not quite creep up to the likes of Teitanblood for instance and although it has that same grinding edge to the guitars, it gets not really into the same levels of Blasphemy and Naked Whipper. In that sense, Liturgy Of Desecration found itself somewhere in the middle of Black Witchery, Conqueror and maybe a band like Angelcorpse. Yet, I am quite sure that the punky ‘Necromantic Ritual’, with its snappy, almost swinging Goregrind snare, must be a true fan’s favourite!

But where this (unnecessary) drawing of parallels mainly gets into the deeper analysis of the music’s details, it is primarily the overwhelming, chaotic and barbaric sound that rings the hells bell. Anyone into the most primitive pummeling barbarity will find their kicks in ‘Spiritual Anticosmic Warspells’, to me especially the outrageously brutal vocals, including pitch shifted gurgles, are a true treat. Who does need finesse and musical sense anyway?
