Perhaps the most prolific Metal band on the planet, Poland’s Throneum unleash their third release already this year of no compromise old school Death Metal. New full-length ‘Deathmass Of The Gravedancer’ (although this material was recorded in 2005) holds, as you would expect, absolutely nothing new when compared to the rest of their gazillion album discography, instead venturing deeper into the murk of blatant and unashamed hero-worship (think Terrorizer (old) Morbid Angel, Autopsy etc.) that guarantees to have you fishing out those cobwebbed, patch-ridden old denims.
Sounding like it was recorded in some ancient forgotten tomb, Throneum have really gone out of their way this time to make their most maggot infested musical statement thus far, pummeling all with walls of sunken, gritty guitar work, insane screams and solid though suitably raw-sounding drum poundings. Even bringing to mind very early Darkthrone on the aptly titled ‘Rotten To The Core’ and ‘Thou Deepest One’, Throneum’s grisly mix of darkened Doom Metal and frantic Death Metal works well for the most part, though at times can be accused of sounding hastily thrown together for the sake of it, essentially lacking the bestial power of their previous efforts.
That said, it’s not as if Throneum are a band who would ever care and in typical style blast it forth regardless, letting the true spirit of the old school take precedence over glitz and sheen. Not their best release to date but a thoroughly brutal one all the same.
