Gosudar’s ‘Egocidal Maze Descent’ is one of those EPs where the title really matches the way the whole thing feels. Instead of sounding like three separate tracks, it plays more like one long trip downward, with each song pulling you a little deeper.
The title track grabs you right away with a mix of fat, slow Death/Doom riffs and flashes of old school Death Metal that keep things moving. The guitars have a huge, crushing sound and really help sell that feeling of being dragged deeper into something. The vocals are deep and hellish, but they’re also surprisingly clear in the mix, which works really well with how heavy everything else sounds.
The production is another thing that stood out to me, especially considering the EP was self-recorded. Nothing gets lost or turns into a muddy mess. You can hear everything clearly, but it still sounds nasty and heavy. By the time ‘Primordial Decay’ kicks in, it almost feels like you’ve been pulled into a black hole and there’s no getting back out.
There are definitely some Spectral Voice vibes in the slower, suffocating Death Doom sections, while the cavernous vocals and old school Death Metal side bring Incantation to mind.
Then ‘Predtecha’ finishes the whole thing off in a way that just makes sense. After the first two tracks drag you down, the closer basically leaves you floating in a dark mental abyss. It’s weird, unsettling, and a perfect ending for an EP that feels more like a full listening experience rather than just three songs thrown together.
