Master – Master [Re-Release]

master – master [re-release]

Info

Paul Speckmann. If you are into (old school) Death Metal, your reaction shouldn’t be ‘What? Who?’. Before Master was formed, the main man was already active in bands like War Cry and Death Strike (although Death Strike became Master again after releasing 1 demo). But the musical direction of Master should be more aggressive than War Cry.

We are talkin’ about 1983 and 1984. What is more aggressive in those days? Raw Thrash, hoarse vocals and mixed with a lot of Mötorhead and Venom influences. All this combined results in early Death Metal. That was Master back then.

Due to the fact that Combat Records didn’t release the 1985 tracks Master recorded, their debut album ‘Master’ was released in 1990 by Nuclear Blast. With tracks like ‘Funeral Bitch’, ‘Master’ and ‘Mangled Dehumanization’ the band provides simple yet effective riff-based old school Death Metal. Not a huge surprise as I mentioned Mötorhead and Venom before. Sometimes you can have a ‘woohoooo, hell’s breaking loose….Witchin’ hour!!!’ feeling even!

Besides the interesting liner notes Displeased Records throw in a DVD with two live shows in the same period of time. Sure, the recordings aren’t all that but it certainly shows the atmosphere of those days. Bitchin’ about it would be moronic as some are spoiled because of all those 5.1 dolby surround, 20 cameras and perfect sound concert registrations.

This album is considered to be a ‘master’-piece, so be sure to get this one if you don’t have it already.
