Altar’s third album. For many bands, this is a crucial point. Further development or stagnation, betrayal or fan loyalty? Some people were already familiar with the new Altar through the two songs on the Displeased ‘Smells Like Team Spirit II’ compilation. And perhaps they were shocked because the times of blasphemous lyrics, lots of Thrash, and brutal Death Metal are over.
On the previous CD, there were already some Thrash influences. Now, with only 2 members left from the ‘Youth against Christ’ CD, the music has become even more Thrash-oriented. Musically, it’s all better than before, you can’t deny that. But whether the fans will accept the development remains to be seen.
They’ve played it smart, the first 3 songs still contain a few Thrashy parts so that the fan doesn’t immediately put the CD away. After this come 5 predominantly mid-tempo songs, including the 2 songs from the Displeased compilation. However, except for ‘Wasted world’, these songs do very little for me. I can’t quite put my finger on what’s missing, but these songs just pass me by without me jumping up even once.
The song ‘2000 years’ on the other hand does appeal to me and also contains an up-tempo part and The Accept cover ‘Fast as a shark’ sounds great. However, the closing ‘R.I.P.’ also just passes me by and goes out like a candle.
A difficult album! In fact, Altar has grown further without denying their roots and I therefore recommend listening to this CD carefully. Old fans who, however, believe that Altar is synonymous with brutal Death Metal, Thrash and blasphemy may be better off leaving this album alone.
